We are seeking a motivated Regulatory Analyst Energy Intern to join our consulting team for an intensive 2-month program. This is an exceptional opportunity for advanced law or public policy students to gain hands-on experience in energy regulation, policy analysis, and stakeholder engagement. You'll work alongside experienced consultants on real client projects, developing expertise that will set you apart as you pursue a career in energy policy, regulatory affairs, or public administration.

Internship Overview

As a Regulatory Analyst Energy Intern, you'll be immersed in the dynamic world of energy regulation and policy. This isn't a typical internship—you'll contribute to meaningful projects that directly impact our clients' regulatory strategy and compliance efforts. You'll learn how to interpret complex regulations, analyze policy implications, track compliance requirements, and communicate findings to diverse stakeholders. This role offers a unique blend of legal research, policy analysis, technical financial analysis, and strategic consulting that will provide invaluable experience whether you're headed to advanced legal practice, graduate programs, or a career in public policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Regulatory Research & Monitoring: Track and analyze energy regulations, public utility commission decisions, and regulatory agency orders; research policy trends affecting energy infrastructure, renewable integration, and utility operations
  • Policy Analysis & Impact Assessment: Evaluate proposed regulations and legislative developments to assess their potential impact on client operations; prepare summaries and briefings on regulatory changes and their business implications
  • Technical & Financial Analysis: Support analysis of utility revenue requirements, rate design structures, and cost recovery mechanisms; assist with load forecasting analysis and review of utility capital improvement programs; evaluate technical components of rate cases and regulatory filings
  • Compliance Tracking & Documentation: Help maintain compliance databases and tracking systems for regulatory requirements, deadlines, and filing obligations; organize and document regulatory materials and research findings
  • Stakeholder Research & Mapping: Research and analyze positions of key stakeholders including regulatory agencies, industry associations, and community groups; support preparation of materials for regulatory proceedings and public engagement
  • Data Analysis & Visualization: Develop dashboards and reports to communicate regulatory trends, compliance metrics, and policy developments to internal teams and clients; create clear, compelling presentations of complex regulatory and financial information
  • Rate Case & Revenue Requirement Support: Assist in analyzing utility revenue requirement calculations, depreciation schedules, and capital structure components; support review of operating expenses, capital investments, and cost allocation methodologies
  • Capital Program Analysis: Help evaluate utility capital improvement programs, infrastructure investment plans, and associated regulatory recovery mechanisms; analyze cost-benefit justifications for major capital projects
  • Support Regulatory Filings & Documentation: Assist with preparation of regulatory submissions, comment letters, and responses to agency inquiries; help organize supporting documentation for rate cases and compliance filings
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with consultants, legal advisors, financial analysts, and client teams to support integrated regulatory strategies; participate in client calls and project meetings to gain exposure to consulting practices

Qualifications

Required:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate (senior year) or graduate degree (Master's level) in Law (2nd year law students preferred), Public Policy, Political Science, Public Administration, Economics, Environmental Studies, or related field
  • Strong research and analytical skills with ability to synthesize complex regulatory and policy information
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, with talent for translating technical concepts for diverse audiences
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and collaboration tools including Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Notion
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently in a hybrid environment
  • Professional demeanor suitable for client interactions
  • Interest in energy policy, utility regulation, and public sector consulting

Strongly Preferred:

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish
  • Experience working with or supporting Public Utility Commissions (through internships, coursework, research projects, or professional experience)
  • Exposure to technical utility concepts including load forecasting, revenue requirements, rate design, or capital improvement programs
  • Coursework or experience in utility economics, energy finance, regulatory economics, or administrative law
  • Familiarity with legal research tools (Westlaw, LexisNexis) or policy databases
  • Previous internship, coursework, or research experience in energy policy, public administration, or regulatory affairs
  • Understanding of utility financial statements and rate-making principles

Work Format & Schedule

This is a hybrid position based in either Orlando, FL or Washington, DC (fully remote if not in these two locations only available for exceptional qualifications), offering a blend of remote work and in-office collaboration. The 2-month program provides flexible scheduling that can accommodate academic commitments, with the opportunity to work approximately 15-25 hours per week (schedule to be determined based on mutual availability and project needs). In-office days will provide valuable face time with the team and clients, while remote days offer focused time for research and analysis.
