Financial Aid Peer Adviser

The Division of Enrollment Management is a key campus thought partner that provides collaborative leadership in university-wide efforts, utilizing systematic, innovative, and synergistic approaches to leverage a data-informed enrollment strategy to improve market distinctiveness, and execute the campus strategic plan. The division comprises the offices of Enrollment Management, Financial Aid & Scholarships, University Registrar, and Undergraduate Admissions.

The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships (OFAS) is a key contributor to student success and student access in higher education, administering all types of financial assistance for eligible students demonstrating financial need, academic merit, and/or other merit factor(s). This includes, but is not limited to scholarships, grants, loans, and/or work-study awards.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Advising and Customer Service, Peer Advisers serve as the primary contact with the public for the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships. Peer Advisers provide telephone and in-person advising by answering general financial aid status questions, identifying, and resolving general problems, informing students and parents of options, processing a variety of financial aid documentation, and administering emergency financial assistance. These duties/responsibilities often involve coordination with financial aid counselors and other campus departments. A Peer Adviser must be well-versed in office policies and procedures and be able to effectively communicate this information to students and parents. A Peer Adviser strictly adheres to the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) in all matters of communication with students and parents.

OFAS student peer positions are conveniently located on campus in the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships in 102 Aldrich Hall. Our OFAS student peers answer questions from students, families, and the public about financial aid resources. We are looking for students with strong communication skills who can interact professionally with others in person, over the phone, via Zoom and by email. We strive to preserve an inviting and positive environment at OFAS; therefore, our OFAS student peers must be friendly, enthusiastic, and reliable. We are interested in students with a great attitude, strong work ethic, and desire to work in a team environment.

Job Duties:

The duties of an OFAS student peer employee include, but are not limited to, the following:

·        Answering phones and checking voicemails.

·        Responding to emails and website chat sessions.

·        Understanding and communicating financial aid office resources to assist current UCI students and respective family members, visitors, and guests.

·        Assisting students with general financial aid questions.

·        Assisting OFAS staff with administrative projects and tasks as needed.

·        Provide event support for major OFAS programs and campus events.

·        Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required

·        Ability to work with frequent interruptions, changing priorities, and multiple deadlines

·        Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality

·        Ability to identify problems and make appropriate referrals

·        Customer Service Focused

·        Excellent Communication Skills (phone, e-mail, in person)

·        Quick Learner and Thinker

·        Takes Initiative

·        Detail-oriented and Task-oriented

·        Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

·        Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in order to apply

·        Must have a summer availability

·        Must have a Work Study Award

Desired

·        Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

·        Familiarity with Social Media

·        Sophomore or Junior level

Time Commitment

·        Available 10-15 hours a week; Monday-Friday.

·        Financial Aid Office offers shifts between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday.

·        Must have a summer availability
