The department prioritizes student safety, timely routes, and sustainable practices, ensuring every student travels to and from school and district-sponsored activities securely. With well-maintained vehicles, trained drivers, and a commitment to a positive travel experience, our team supports both student well-being and the broader school community.

JOB SUMMARY

The Routing Coordinator is responsible for developing and maintaining efficient school bus routes and stops to support the district’s student transportation system. This role coordinates transportation logistics, addresses and resolves transportation-related issues, and ensures compliance with district policies and safety standards. The Routing Coordinator also arranges transportation for special events, provides accurate information and resources to staff and families, and manages specialized transportation software and systems to support daily operations.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check.  Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Must be 21 years of age or older
  3. One (1) year of experience working at a school district or similar transportation department
  4. Valid Utah Driver's License and evidence of insurability
  5. Have or obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 60 days of hire
  6. Hold or obtain a CPR & First Aid Certificate within six (6) months of hire
  7. Ability to pass the Physical Assessment Standards for Utah School Bus Drivers, DOT Medical Exam, and will be subject to random drug/alcohol testing
  8. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience using data-based software
  9. Speak, read, write, analyze, and follow written and verbal communication in English; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

These are examples of skills and experience that the best-qualified candidates may have.  Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.

  1. Two (2) or more years of experience working at a school district or similar transportation department
  2. Knowledge of pertinent student transportation codes, policies, regulations, laws, and safety practices
  3. Experience using Zum or Geo Tab software or other transportation routing software
  4. Ability to read and interpret roadmaps and electronic Global Positioning System (GPS) systems
  5. Experience in compiling and providing data for inclusion in the State of Utah's annual reports
  6. Spanish or other language proficiency, including the ability to read, write, speak, and understand

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Support route planning and assignments, assist the Transportation Director in developing and updating bus routes, including scheduling, distance verification, and bus stop designation
  2. Manage transportation software systems, administer and support computerized routing systems (e.g., Zum, Geo Tab), respond to user inquiries, troubleshoot with vendors, install updates, and participate in testing new features
  3. Audit and optimize routes by reviewing mileage, timing, and stop accuracy to recommend adjustments that improve efficiency and safety
  4. Maintain route documentation, update and distribute route maps and descriptions for current and future reference
  5. Ensure compliance and safety, evaluate routes and stops to confirm alignment with district policies, safety standards, IEP requirements, and mandated guidelines
  6. Coordinate transportation activities, collaborate with administrators, drivers, and the department to align transportation services with district needs (e.g., field trips, special education, sports teams, etc.)
  7. Perform the functions of a substitute Bus Driver to meet student transportation when needed
  8. Serve in an on-call capacity outside of regular scheduled work hours as needed, respond to transportation needs or emergencies within required departmental timelines, and document all actions and resolutions in accordance with district procedures; a stipend or supplemental pay may be provided for on-call duties
  9. Communicate with staff and stakeholders, provide drivers, schools, and parents with route updates, schedule changes, and answers to inquiries to ensure reliable transportation services
  10. Prepare and maintain reports, documents, and correspondence of a confidential and non-confidential nature (e.g., mileage, student counts, capacity, days operated, periodic and ad-hoc reports for department, district, and state, etc.)
  11. Review and monitor reports and documents (e.g., federal, state standards, and district policy reports, etc.) to stay current with federal, state standards, and district guidelines
  12. Maintain accurate transportation data, track, and update route, drivers, and operational information in mapping software and databases to ensure timely and accurate records (e.g., transportation schedules, leave requests, transportation data, employee records, etc.) and provide up-to-date information, completion of processes, and historical reference in accordance with established administrative guidelines and legal requirements
  13. Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars, as assigned, to convey and gather information required to perform functions
  14. Support and monitor staff performance, provide direction to assigned drivers and bus attendants, assist with hiring interviews, and recommend training or corrective actions to maintain the department’s high service standards
  15. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  16. Represent the department in a professional manner using workplace etiquette
  17. Work under limited supervision, use time-management and prioritization strategies, adapt to changing work priorities, and work with frequent interruptions to meet deadlines
  18. Support a team environment by collaborating with one’s own and other work units to effectively perform the duties of the position
  19. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
  20. As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift up to 50 pounds
  21. Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective function of the work unit

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing, and pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
