Job Description

 

 

 

The Iowa Department of Transportation is looking to hire a Survey Party Chief in the District 2 Mason City Office for the Right-of-Way crew. As a Survey Party Chief in District Right-of-Way, you will lead the field activity of others who serve as part of the district survey crew.  Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Preserve and restore control points and land corners on District 2 Office resurfacing, reconstruction and maintenance projects.   
  • Responsible for the permanent record of fieldwork performed by the crew including updating maps and excel sheets.
  • Operate or direct team members in the operation of GPS (Global Positioning System) and Robotic Total Station equipment to take and check measurements.
  • Establish proposed permanent right of way and temporary easements for viewing by property owners before they sign a contact, condemnation viewing for the courts and final location to identify the limits of construction before a project begins.
  • Directs and participates in the recovery of survey markers
  • Assist the Land Surveyor in charge of compiling various recorded information required to perform several types of field survey applications for locating and verifying land corners, lot corners, rights-of-way and topography features.  

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Iowa Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License

Shift Requirements: M-Thu, 6:00-4:30; Must be able to travel and may be required to spend overnight away during assignments.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

 

 

The equivalent of four years of full-time engineering survey experience which included the operation of electronic and mechanical survey instruments;

OR

 

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the equivalent of thirty semester hours of college, university, or technical school course work in civil engineering, construction engineering, or photogrammetry for one year of the required experience with a maximum substitution of four years;OR

 

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of twelve months of full-time experience as an Assistant Survey Party Chief.

Additional Qualification Requirements

 

 

 

  • Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained in order to continue employment.
  • If a CDL is not required, all positions are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.
  • In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), designated positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • Employees must be able to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments.
  • Employees in designated positions must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
