CITY OF NEWPORT NEWS HAS AN OPEN “SUSTAINABILITY ENGAGEMENT/COMMUNICATIONS” INTERNSHIP
What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do? Are you looking for an exciting opportunity in local government? This internship will be packed full of hands-on immersion to learn, develop, and grow your career! The City of Newport News is seeking a dynamic and mission driven Sustainability Analyst / Community Engagement Intern to join the Office of Sustainability in the City Manager’s Office. This position plays a key role in the development of the city’s Climate Action Plan to advance citywide sustainability initiatives through data analytics, strategic communication, public engagement, and collaborative partnerships. The ideal candidate is passionate about environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and community-centered development, and is skilled at translating complex sustainability issues into accessible messages for a broad audience. This position is primarily office-based with regular travel to community events, public meetings, and stakeholder gatherings throughout the city. Hybrid work opportunities may be available.
How much money can I make? The rate of pay for this internship is $15.00 -$20.00 per hour. What type of schedule will I work, and how long will the internship be? Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends to attend public events. The internship ends June 30, 2026. What type of degree program and or experience would be best be suited for this internship? Have or working towards Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Communications, Public Relations, Environmental Studies, or a related field. Master’s degree program preferred.
What are the qualifications for this internship? This internship will require knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You will need to be able to create and enter data into spreadsheets and databases. You will also need excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with the public and other City employees. • Have demonstrated commitment to community empowerment and environmental sustainability. • Have exceptional verbal and written communication skills. • Have proficiency in digital media, graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite), and content management systems.
