Instructional Laboratory Coordinator

The University of Wyoming Science Institute is seeking an Instructional Laboratory Coordinator to oversee all operations of the Student Collaborative Research Outreach and Learning Laboratory (SCROLL) teaching lab in the Science Initiative Building. SCROLL is a newly constructed space designed to support Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs).

This position will coordinate instructional laboratory scheduling in collaboration with faculty and the Registrar's Office to ensure optimal use of the facility. The Lab Coordinator will also work closely with the Science Institute CURE Coordinator and other stakeholders to manage shared equipment access, support instructor training, and ensure a safe, functional lab environment. This position reports to the Science Institute CURE Coordinator.

JOB TITLE:

Instructional Laboratory Coordinator - UW Science Institute

JOB PURPOSE:

Coordinate the procurement, installation and maintenance of materials, equipment and supplies for an instructional laboratory; assist in teaching students lab techniques, methods and procedures; may perform experiments for research projects as directed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and schedule the instructional use of the SCROLL lab in coordination with faculty and the Registrar's Office.
  • Coordinate access, training, and use of shared equipment across multiple CUREs.
  • Provide technical expertise on laboratory methods, instrumentation, and instructional support.
  • Train instructors and teaching assistants in proper lab techniques and equipment use.
  • Oversee inventory and procurement of biological, chemical, and general lab materials.
  • Ensure all safety protocols are followed, including maintenance of Safety Data Sheets and compliance with biosafety and chemical hygiene procedures.
  • Maintain lab cleanliness, equipment functionality, and an organized work environment.
  • Train lab users on safety, etiquette, and standard operating procedures.
  • Support documentation of laboratory activities and experiment records.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: 1 year work-related experience in a wet lab

Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements: must be able to obtain and hold CITI biosafety, chemical hygiene, and laboratory safety certifications upon hire

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree with 1 year of laboratory management experience (experience may include aspects of thesis research work)
  • Experience obtaining and organizing laboratory supplies and materials
  • Demonstrated ability to implement laboratory protocols and multitask in active lab settings
  • Experience conducting or supporting diagnostic or research testing in a lab
  • Familiarity with chemical, biological, and radiological safety policies and procedures
  • Proficiency operating and maintaining lab instruments (e.g., autoclaves, ultracold freezers, microscopes)
  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures and inventory management
  • Ability to manage a multi-user, multi-purpose space with varied stakeholder needs
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience mentoring undergraduates in laboratory settings
  • Experience facilitating CUREs or project-based learning
  • Experience engaging with community or external partners
  • Passion for science and science education
