Summer 2026 Graduate Intern - Research Library

About the Team & Role

The Federal Reserve Board Research Library is offering two paid summer internships for graduate-level library or information science students to advance several projects that will improve library services for Board researchers. We offer a full array of customized library services to staff members throughout the Board, with particular focus on data-intensive research, data acquisitions and cataloging, research curation, metadata and taxonomy, automation development, and AI support.

To enhance discoverability and use of the Board's data and research resources, projects will focus on data- and metadata-related efforts to bolster migrations to new library and data discovery systems. Interns' learning outcomes may include developing expertise in metadata cataloging, library system migration, process documentation, and instructional materials development. These skills directly transfer to a wide variety of positions within academic, research, and corporate libraries.

Depending on the interns' skills and interests, they will work on at least two of the following projects:

Metadata and Cataloging – Comprehensive Data Inventory and/or Library Services Platform: To aid the migration, roll-out, and expansion of our comprehensive data catalog and our new Library Services Platform (LSP), interns will tackle metadata projects in line with national, international, and local standards. This work may include: metadata maintenance; crafting draft records; and developing quality checks among systems.

Technology, Software, and Process Improvements: To bolster workflow efficiencies, interns will conduct task analysis and workflow documentation to identify automation opportunities, document processes and code, and work with internal AI technology as appropriate.

Taxonomies and Controlled Vocabularies: To enable discovery, interoperability, and process efficiencies in our catalogs and other discovery systems, interns will support the development and maintenance of taxonomy and authority control by working on the Federal Reserve Subject Taxonomy (FRST) and Federal Reserve Authority of Names (FRAN). Depending on need, projects may also address researcher identifiers (ORCID) and DOI metadata through Crossref.

Instructional Materials Development: To develop innovative tools for self-service and encourage use of these tools by our stakeholders, interns will build select resource guides, conduct annual review of library website content, and develop instructional materials related to the Library Services Platform transition, as well as raise awareness of library services.
