Reading Tutor (Off Campus Work-Study)

LEAP (Learning, Enrichment, and Achievement Partners) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides free after-school reading support at  elementary school sites in the Tustin Unified School District (TUSD). LEAP serves elementary school students, who qualify for TUSD's after-school program, primarily economically disadvantaged and English Language Learner students. The LEAP Reading Intervention Program improves literacy skills by providing small group reading instruction conducted by highly trained volunteers and college students.

Qualifications: 

  • Federal Work-Study Award for 2025-26
  • Current college student with strong academic skills, especially in Language Arts
  • Interest in and ability to relate positively to children from diverse backgrounds
  • Must have transportation to and from school sites

Responsibilities:

  • Tutor and mentor small groups of elementary-aged students
  • Plan and conduct reading lessons with assistance from credentialed teachers
  • LEAP will provide introductory and ongoing training

Time Commitment

  • 2-4 days per week, for the entire school year, excluding school holidays
  • Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from approximately 2:00-5:00 PM (3 hours)
  • Wednesdays from approximately 12:30-4:30 PM (4 hours)

Requirements: 

  • Complete UCI Financial Aid Office paperwork after employment approval by LEAP personnel
  • Attend introductory and ongoing training provided by LEAP Learning Center
  • Meet additional health and background requirements set by Tustin Unified School District
