Communications Coordinator

Summary: The Communications Coordinator writes marketing and communications materials and assists the Communications Manager in media relations and public relations projects.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

SLAM communications

  • Oversee 1 Fine Art Blog, including developing ideas for blog posts, writing and/or organizing up to two posts per week, securing relevant image permissions, and communicating with other potential blog writers about ideas and timelines.
  • Write articles as needed for the Museum Magazine and assist the Communications Manager with gathering images and circulating copy and galleys for review.
  • Draft event listings in a timely manner and ensure the content meets the website standards developed by the Marketing and Communications Department. This includes rewriting the copy as needed in the appropriate style, ensuring there are useable images, and updating the listing as needed. The Communications Coordinator is also responsible for following up with the event contact person as needed when more information becomes available.
  • When directed, produce other copy for portions of slam.org that are managed by the Marketing and Communications Department, including exhibitions pages. 
  • Collaborate with the entire Marketing and Communications team on the development of social media posts and other digital content, especially posts and content related to the 1 Fine Arts Blog.
  • Provide Museum information to online community events calendars and to external arts and community websites.
  • Assist the Communications Manager in developing communications plans for upcoming exhibitions and major initiatives and post-project reports on the effectiveness of press outreach and blog engagement. 
  • Provide support to the Communications Manager on internal staff communications.

 

Media Relations

  • Assist the Communications Manager in developing and maintaining lists of local, regional, national and international media and arts bloggers and influencers.
  • Assist the Communication Manager in writing and deploying of press releases and other press materials.
  • Assist in the execution of press previews and other media events.
  • Provide logistical support and supervision for in-gallery photo and video shoots by visiting members of the press.
  • Compile media clips and send weekly reports as needed. 

 

Other Duties

  • Serve on select Museum project teams as assigned. 
  • Maintain the Museum’s donation bag program, including receiving and responding to requests, making the donation bags, and keeping track of the shared distribution log.
  • Work as needed at events managed by the Marketing and Communications Department.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, marketing or related area, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal, communication, project-management, and organizational skills; strong writing, copywriting, and proofreading skills; and the ability to execute multiple tasks, often simultaneously, while maintaining deadlines and high professional standards.
  • Experience in writing for news or public relations and familiarity with AP Style required.
  • Familiarity with Excel, Photoshop, WordPress, and desktop publishing software preferred.
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.

 

Additional Details:

Hiring Range: $25.88– $31.70, commensurate with experience

Status: Regular, Full-Time (37.5 hours/week)
