Summary

Alvarez Engineers, Inc. (Company) is a Civil Engineering consulting company founded in 1995. Company is seeking a motivated civil engineering student (within 12 months of graduation) to join our team as a part-time Engineering Technician. This role is designed as a bridge between school and professional practice. While enrolled, the student will support our design team on FDOT projects and gain exposure to plan production, design standards, and engineering practices. At graduation, candidates who successfully complete the internship may be offered a full-time position.

Job Description

  • Job Title: Engineering Technician
  • Employment Type: Part-Time Internship with potential for full-time upon graduation
  • Pay: $26.00/ hour up to 29 hours per week
  • Location: Doral, FL (on site)
  • Key Responsibilities
    • Prepare engineering drawings, plans, reports and technical exhibits in accordance with FDOT Design Manual (FDM).
    • Utilize software platforms (e.g., MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS) for roadway, drainage, traffic, and utility design support.
    • Assist engineers with plan preparation, including cross-sections, profiles, typical sections, quantities, and details.
    • Perform quantity take-offs and support the development of engineer’s estimates.
    • Maintain project files and documentation per FDOT Quality Control procedures.
    • Coordinate with engineers and project managers to ensure plan sets are accurate, consistent, and meet deadlines.
    • Conduct research using FDOT and municipal databases, standards, and resources to support design tasks.
    • Assist with submittal preparation for reviews and respond to comments.

Qualifications

  • Current civil engineering student within 12 months of graduation
  • Interest in transportation and civil infrastructure design
  • Familiarity with MicroStation / OpenRoads Designer, and AutoCAD a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and eagerness to learn FDOT standards and practices
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work part-time during school (schedule flexible) with potential to transition into full-time employment after graduation

Growth Path

  • Engineering Technician (Student / Pre-Degree / Post-Degree) – Part-time role with potential transition to full-time role, billed as technician
  • Engineering Intern (E.I.) – Upon graduation, passing the FE exam, and required experience.
  • Engineer – Continued growth with FDOT and other projects and professional licensure support.
