Scott Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)
The Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering's (WSCOE) Scott Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE Program) pairs first- and second-year engineering students with faculty mentors to engage in meaningful, hands-on, research activities and projects that help students better understand the types of problems engineers face and how to solve them. Benefits of the program include gaining research experience, exploring major/career interests, closely working with a faculty mentor, learning/practicing technical skills, getting paid for meaningful work, and enhancing student resumes.
SURE students will work 5-10 hours per week throughout the spring 2026 semester in a research lab supervised by a faculty mentor and/or graduate research assistant (GRA). The program culminates with the SURE Poster Fair where students will showcase their research to donors, university/college leadership, faculty/staff, and family and friends.
Essential Duties and Expectations
While there is considerable flexibility on what the SURE experience can look like from lab-to-lab and student-to-student, it is expected that all students will:
- Professionally communicate with and respond to SURE Program coordinators, faculty mentors, and GRAs via email, phone, text, or in-person, in a timely manner.
- Work 5-10 hours/week on an engineering research project, assisting faculty and graduate students in performing experiments, collecting data, and documenting results throughout the entirety of the spring term.
- Meet periodically (e.g. weekly or bi-weekly) with their matched faculty mentor/GRA.
- Complete any required training in a timely manner.
- Attend the following events:
- Hiring meeting – Wednesday, November 5, 2026 (5:00 – 6:00 PM MT),
