The Wall Street Journal Photo Editor/Photographer Internship, New York (Summer 2026)

Are you a driven, student journalist eager to work in an award-winning newsroom before your senior year? The Wall Street Journal photo editor/photographer internship is an opportunity primarily for college juniors to work in our award-winning newsroom. Graduate students enrolled in a degree program by the application deadline – October 31, 2025 – who are returning to school in the fall are also eligible to apply. Graduating seniors should apply to WSJ News Associates.

This internship will be either a full time photo editing role, covering a range of subject areas and with department production assistance, or a hybrid photo editor/photographer role, with an expected 1-2 days in the field per week alongside photo editing duties. The role will depend on the candidates and you should specify your preference in the cover letter.

As intern photo editor, you will produce and build visual assets for news stories and enterprise content with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom, anticipating photographic needs as stories develop. You will be expected to deliver photos for breaking news and live news coverage, conduct social media research, and may be expected to assign freelance work. You will be building stories in our CMS, conducting research using various photo wire agencies. You will collaborate with other photo editors, visual colleagues, reporters and editors across the newsroom. You will also have the opportunity to pitch visually innovative and original approaches to stories and to collaborate with the audience and platform teams on social strategy and distribution of WSJ content.

In your role as intern photographer, you will go on news and portraiture assignments for the WSJ team, ranging from business coverage to breaking news to features. You will be required to think creatively and produce visual narratives for complex stories, following your brief in detail and filing quickly with accurate captions.

You should have a familiarity with photo editing programs, such as Photoshop and Photo Mechanic, and you must have evident knowledge of photojournalism and documentary photography. Social media savviness, from X to Instagram, is a must. Basic coding skills are a plus.

We are looking for ambitious students who think foremost about the audience and are able to work independently under deadline pressure. You don’t need to be a business or economics expert, but a commitment to high journalistic standards is a must.

You should have completed at least one prior reporting internship with another professional media organization or published exceptional work with a campus news outlet or as a freelancer.

HOW TO APPLY:

Please upload one PDF document (max. 5MB). Your application document should contain:

The deadline to apply is Friday, Oct. 31, 2025 at midnight Eastern time. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.

Internship timing: 10 weeks between June and August.
