Position Overview

This position is accountable for obtaining accurate survey measurements for the purpose of preparing plans for roads, bridges, culverts and land acquisition plats, and documents.

Essential Functions

  • Obtains accurate survey measurements in a timely manner to ensure there is no delay in the completion of projects.
  • Collects accurate and meaningful survey data obtained through the use of surveying equipment.
  • Performs calculations and preparation of preliminary drafts showing topographic features.
  • Assists the Survey Crew Chief in training survey crew personnel in the use and maintenance of equipment and instruments.
  • Sets barricades and acts as flag person for survey crews working on or near the roadway.
  • Cleans, repairs, and maintains surveying equipment.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current registration as a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Illinois; OR Completion of a bachelor’s degree in land surveying from an accredited college or university, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Surveying examination or Surveyor Intern License PLUS one year of experience in the practice of land surveying; OR Completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related science including 24 semester hours of land surveying courses, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Surveying examination or Surveyor Intern license PLUS one year of experience in the practice of land surveying.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of land surveying.
  • Considerable knowledge of surveying standards.
  • Considerable knowledge of CADD workstations.
  • Knowledge of the latest surveying equipment and software such as Open Roads Designer, Leica Infinity, Trimble Business Center, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) processing, and ArcGIS (GIS).
  • Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with employees, agency officials, and the general public.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Successful completion of a background screening.
