Event Director

BACKGROUND

The Great History Challenge is a nationwide academic competition for middle school social studies students. Our mission is to use the fun of competition to get students excited about history while providing students who are passionate about history much-needed recognition.

At the Regional Championship, students face off in a live, head-to-head showdown to see who can buzz-in and answer the most questions. It’s a history-themed version of Jeopardy! for middle school students!

THE POSITION

As Event Director, you will manage the Regional Championship event and ensure that participants and their families have a great experience. Event Directors work each event in small teams and collectively are responsible for:

* Overseeing setup and teardown on the day of the event

* Supervising event staff/volunteers

* Welcoming participants and their families

* Overseeing the competition and ensuring that it runs fairly in accordance to the rules

* Professionally representing the Great History Challenge to teachers and administrators

* Managing personal travel arrangements

It’s a big responsibility, but it’s a wonderful opportunity to travel and work with some fabulous students who are passionate about history.

THE COMMITMENT

This role is intentionally designed as a part-time opportunity with minimal responsibilities outside of event dates, making it a great fit for anyone who works or studies remotely!

From February through April, we host 2 -3 events per week in major U.S. cities. Because these events are spread across the country, Event Directors should expect to typically be traveling Monday through Friday. The events themselves are held in the late afternoons, leaving mornings free, but your presence at each assigned location is essential to ensuring our students receive the best possible competition experience.

Before the season begins, all Event Directors will attend an in-person orientation and training in Columbus, Ohio, from January 23 - 28, 2026. We will also need all hands on deck for the culminating event of the competition, our National Championship, held over Memorial Day Weekend.

Event Directors are paid at the conclusion of each competition week for the events they work. All travel and lodging costs are fully covered, and a stipend is provided to offset meals and incidental expenses.
