Job Description:

CertainTeed Roofing R&D - Polymer team are advancing the technologies to make weather resilient roofing products and support our company’s vision of being a recognized leader in sustainable habitat to make the world a better home.

You will join a team dedicated to Polymer Modified Roofing Products and provide critical material synthesis and testing support for multiple projects, including key business strategic initiatives. Our team and collaborators are evaluating materials and processes to improve roofing shingle performance based on scientific understanding, which we are building through the structure-property relationships of polymer materials. Your work on bench scale material synthesis and performance testing will directly inform what technologies should be tested in production, as well as validate scientific hypotheses that are critical to future developments. This work is multidisciplinary and spans polymer chemistry, material science, chemical engineering, and applied physics.

Project Scope

  • Probe structure-property relationships of polymers in asphalt formulation, to enable new product development and achieve the specific functional performance.
  • Support lab testing of the team. 
  • Support scale-up production trial and new product development.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled as a student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD program in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or other related disciplines.

Competencies:

  • Methodically execute sample testing and analysis with good attention to detail
  • Work effectively with a diverse R&D team actively supporting a culture of safety
  • Capable of working independently as well as with a project team
  • Able to make preliminary assessments/quality/meaning of data
  • Able to deliver short PowerPoint presentations summarizing findings
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Open and curious mindset

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Experience with laboratory and/or manufacturing facilities
  • Previous research/intern experience in a lab setting
