Field Engineer
Summary:
Field Engineer (FE) is a critical, hands-on, site-based position that serves as the essential bridge between the project office and the field construction team. The FE is responsible for supporting the project team to ensure all work is built accurately, adhering to design specifications, quality standards, and safety protocols.
This role is an excellent starting point for a civil engineer or construction management professional, providing vital practical experience in construction methods, documentation, and coordination. Success in this position is a direct path toward career advancement into roles such as Project Engineer or Site Superintendent
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Daily Reporting: Prepare and maintain detailed daily reports on construction progress, activities, resource usage, and any site incidents. Compile data necessary for contractor payment requests and assist with time entry and cost coding.
- Material & Procurement: Assist the Superintendent in placing material and tool orders, and review invoices and delivery tickets for accuracy.
- Plan Interpretation: Serve as the primary resource for interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and project specifications for foremen and craft personnel. Ensure the latest plan revisions are always in use on-site.
- Quality Control (QC): Observe and inspect the contractor's work (e.g., rebar placement, concrete pouring, welding) to verify that it meets all quality standards and design requirements before materials are set/covered.
- Certifications: Complete or maintain any company-required certifications, such as MOT (Maintenance of Traffic).
- Material Coordination: Track, confirm, and inspect that materials are delivered on time, correctly accounted for, and stored appropriately on-site.
- Critical Lifts: Assist in the preparation and review of Crane Lift Plans (critical lift plans).
- Utility Locates: Schedule, track and confirm necessary utility locates.
- Safety and Environmental Compliance: Help ensure all on-site activities strictly adhere to the project's Health & Safety Program and established environmental protocols.
- Participation: Actively participate in site safety meetings and regular safety walkdowns/inspections.
Qualifications:
- Education/Experience: Entry-level position. (prior internships in field are a plus).
- Attitude: Must demonstrate a genuine and enthusiastic interest in the heavy civil/industrial construction industry.
- Physical: Must possess a willingness to learn and get hands-on to assist the team in the field.
- Skills: Strong organizational skills and the demonstrated ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for interacting with craft workers, engineers, and management.
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite, email, etc.).
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, kneel, walk, talk, see, hear, push, pull, climb, bend and stoop. Must have stamina in inclement weather conditions and be able spend 50% + of time working outside in the field. The employee frequently is required to stand, sit, walk (occasionally on rough terrain/in varying weather conditions), climb, use manual dexterity to operate tools used in the course of work, hear sufficient to hear conversations in person and via telephone and radio, and vision sufficient for distance sight and to read diagrams, manual reports, rules, regulations, laws and plans. The employee is occasionally required to reach, push and pull with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Physical dexterity may involve stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions. The employee must be able to maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment and the movement of mobile equipment.
