Laboratory Assistant Microbiology

Job Title: Laboratory Assistant – Microbiology (Entry-Level / Trainee)

Job Summary:
We are looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant to support day-to-day microbiological testing and lab operations. This is an entry-level role ideal for someone passionate about microbiology and eager to learn core lab techniques such as autoclaving, pour plate preparation, sample handling, and basic aseptic techniques.
As the lab works toward ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, this role includes training and active participation in maintaining quality standards and documentation. You will be directly trained by the lead microbiologist.

Key Responsibilities:
Autoclaving and Sterilization
• Prepare materials for sterilization (media, glassware, waste)
• Operate and monitor the autoclave under guidance
• Understand basic sterilization cycles and safety procedures
• Maintain autoclave logbook and routine maintenance checks
Microbiological Testing Support
• Assist in preparing (pour plate technique) and pipetting
• Follow aseptic techniques when handling samples and media
• Assist with inoculation and incubation of microbial samples
Lab Maintenance & Cleanliness
• Clean and sanitize lab benches and equipment daily
• Wash, dry, and sterilize lab tools and glassware
• Ensure proper disposal of biological and chemical waste
• Monitor and restock lab supplies and consumables
Qualifications:
Minimum:
• High school diploma or equivalent (science coursework preferred)
• Interest in microbiology, biotechnology, or lab science
• Good communication skills and a strong work ethic
Preferred:
• Prior experience in a school, university, or commercial lab
• Basic understanding of microbiological terms (CFU, aseptic, sterile)
• Familiarity with lab equipment like incubators, autoclaves, pipettes

Working Environment:
• Lab-based environment handling non-pathogenic microbes
• Use of PPE including gloves, lab coat, and face protection as required
• Standing for extended periods; occasional lifting of materials (up to ~10 kg)
