Anticipated Opening - Adapted Physical Education Teacher

LEARN, Southeastern Connecticut's Regional Educational Service Center, invites candidates to apply for an Adapted Physical Education Teacher opening at our Ocean Avenue LEARNing Academy in New London, Connecticut.
 
General Scope of Responsibilities
The Adapted Physical Education Teacher provides a specially designed physical education program for students with I.E.P. identified disabilities and who may have a substantial delay or disorder in physical development.
 
Relationship Within the Organization
The Adapted Physical Education Teacher will participate in the planning and implementation of a continuum of services (consultation, indirect, and direct service) designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities and/or who have a substantial delay or disorder in physical development. The teacher is responsible to the Director and Assistant Director of Special Education.
 
Specific Responsibilities 

  • Meet professional responsibilities listed in the Connecticut Teacher Competencies.
  • Provide appropriate developmental Adapted Physical Education programming and intervention to students with special needs.
  • Complete and submit required reports within specified time limits.
  • Develop and implement a schedule for providing services to students in the area of developmental adapted physical education for each program assigned.
  • Make recommendations to transdisciplinary team in developing students’ Individual Education Plans.
  • Provide input and write activities for special programs which involve physical education for students with special needs.
  • Work cooperatively with staff, parents, colleagues, and administrators.
  • Attend appropriate meetings including, but not limited to, Planning and Placement Team meetings, and staff meetings.
  • Support staff providing physical and movement classes programs and provide appropriate feedback.
  • Encourage students to work to the best of their abilities and to take pride in their achievements.
  • Establish criteria for, and inform students of, the basis of assessment.in alignment with but not limited to required CT SDE PE.
  • Promote self-awareness, self-respect, appropriate behavior and responsibility.
  • Provide a stimulating environment in which students learn and interact.
  • Assess and evaluate student learning on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain professional attitude in working with others.
  • Conduct APE lessons that follow SDE guidelines for Physical Education.
  • Follow guidelines with regard to recordkeeping, documentation, and reporting.
  • Communicate pertinent information related to self, student, program and agency.
  • Model and provide plans to teach and positively reinforce appropriate social skills and behaviors.
  • Foster self-worth and independence in students.
  • Supervise and monitor instructional assistants and other persons assigned to the classroom.
  • Support program and agency goals.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Ability to Lift/restrain students 50 lbs or higher as needed.
  • Maintain APE equipment and materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director of Special Education.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Current CT SDE certification in Physical Education required.
  • Experience in Adapted Physical Education preferred.
