2026 Summer Manufacturing Tooling Intern

As a Manufacturing Tooling Engineering Intern at Steelcase, you will be immersed in the world of manufacturing tooling and equipment design. This internship offers a hands-on learning experience where you’ll support the development and improvement of tools used in our production processes, including dies, fixtures, gauges, and roll-form tooling. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and skilled tradespeople to understand how tooling impacts product quality, cost, and safety. 

What You Will Be Doing: 

  • This role is ideal for students who are passionate about mechanical design, manufacturing processes, and problem-solving in a collaborative environment. 
  • Assist with CAD design and updates for tooling components (e.g., SolidWorks). 
  • Help create technical drawings and documentation. 
  • Support tooling development for dies, fixtures, and gauges. 
  • Observe tooling testing and qualification processes. 
  • Shadow engineers during troubleshooting on the shop floor. 
  • Collect and analyze tooling performance data. 
  • Collaborate with engineering and tool room teams. 
  • Attend meetings and contribute to tooling improvement ideas. 
  • Learn about equipment selection (presses, roll formers). 
  • Help gather technical specs and vendor details. 

Who You Are: 

Graduation Requirements 

  • Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at a nationally accredited program. 
  • Actively enrolled in a degree seeking program at the time of application and throughout the duration of the internship or co-op position. 
  • Preferred majors for this position: Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field 
  • Preferred academic standing for this position: Junior or rising Senior students (December 2026 graduation dates and beyond)  

 

Work Authorization/Sponsorship 

  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.  The company will not offer sponsorships or work visas now or in the future for this role.  

Required Qualifications: 

  • Familiarity with SolidWorks or other CAD software. 
  • Strong interest in manufacturing and mechanical design. 
  • Basic understanding of engineering principles and technical drawing. 
  • Strong analytical and technical skills and experience  
  • Demonstrated creative problem solving and proactive learning  
  • Strong technical documentation and organizational skills  
  • Robust proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)  
  • Experience working in a team-based environment  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to articulate clearly 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Exposure to manufacturing environments or hands-on mechanical projects. 
  • Strong interest in tooling systems such as dies, fixtures, and roll-form tooling. 
  • Prior intern, co-op, or research experience in engineering   
  • Leadership experience inside and/or outside the classroom
