What’s The Role?
As a Planning Technician with the Town of Collierville, you’ll play a key role in shaping the community’s future by reviewing, processing, and approving a variety of land development plans while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. In this dynamic position, you will evaluate and approve administrative site plans and permits—including signs, fences, and cell towers—conduct site inspections and interpret construction plans and specifications. You’ll provide professional customer service to developers and residents, helping them navigate commercial site plans, subdivision requests, and development processes. Your work will involve close collaboration with other Town departments, supporting the Departmental Review Team (DRT) in reviewing applications and offering feedback. You’ll also create GIS-based location maps, maintain and update the Planning Division’s website, assist with budgeting and reporting, and support boards such as the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals by attending meetings and operating audio/visual equipment. In addition, you’ll perform a variety of administrative tasks, from answering inquiries and preparing development documents to maintaining files and managing correspondence.
Why Join the Planning Division in Collierville Now?
- As of January 2025, Collierville has a new mayor and several new Board members. They funded an update to the Town’s Land Use Plan (into a full Comprehensive Plan) over the next 18 months with the help of an outside consultant. The consultant will be selected this fall. This will likely be followed by a new Zoning Ordinance. All Planning Division staff will patriciate in these projects and gain invaluable experience (and flex their planning skills).
- We began using public education/engagement tools in 2025 with planner-friendly software such as ERSI’s Storymap.
- Our Board implemented a new “career ladder” program on 7/1/25 so entry level staff have opportunities for growth within the organization. The Planning Technician role has two distinct levels, I and II. Qualified Planning Technicians would be eligible for advancement into a Planner I position if one becomes available.
Minimum Requirements
Here is what you need to be considered for the position of Planning Technician I:
- Associate’s degree required, bachelor’s degree in urban planning or a closely related field preferred. Closely related fields to urban planning include geography, political science, urban studies, architecture, landscape architecture, environmental science, or GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
- At least one (1) year experience and/or training with knowledge in a municipal planning department; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Valid driver’s license
Applicants with more advanced degrees and experience could be eligible for the Planning Technician II role.
