This position offers an exciting opportunity to assist with collection, analysis, and reporting of biological monitoring data to regulatory agencies and management and to provide technical and scientific computer assistance to scientific staff. The incumbent is responsible for processing coded wire tags (CWT) from juvenile fish salvaged at the State Water Project and Central Valley Project export facilities in the Delta and for maintaining the associated CWT equipment and facilities. The position will also provide GIS technical assistance to projects and programs throughout the department and assistance with environmental compliance fieldwork and data analysis.
Specific duties include preparing and organizing necessary laboratory equipment, extracting tags from salvaged fish, and reading fish tags under microscope and reporting tag code data; entering tag data into a database; creating and editing maps, creating and editing geospatial data, performing spatial data analysis, assisting with geodatabase design and maintenance, processing aerial imagery, assisting with online GIS data collection, documenting geospatial data files to meet DWR enterprise data and metadata standards; performing data entry and QA/QC, and contributing to the preparation of reports and presentations; assisting in other field and laboratory data collection efforts, assisting staff with analysis of physical and biological data and preparing and presenting results, conducting research into emerging hardware, software, and network technologies, and providing technical computer assistance.
This position requires the incumbent to work cooperatively with others, maintain regular, consistent, predictable attendance, and exercise good judgment. The incumbent must have experience in handling fish and biological field specimens, field data collection, and general data entry procedures; excellent computer operation skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access), and ArcGIS. Prior GIS experience is desired. Seasonally frequent travel to Skinner Delta Fish Protective Facility (Byron, CA, 1.5 hour drive one-way) will be required. Work on weekends and occasional holidays may be required. Incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Special Requirements
Must be able to meet the demands of field work in terrestrial and aquatic habitats, including swim at least 50 yards and stay afloat at least 10 minutes; must be able to move and transport equipment or objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to function without incapacitation due to sea-sickness. The incumbent must have the ability to conduct field work for long hours under a variety of climatic conditions and in rugged terrain. Weekend, night, irregular, holiday, and extended work hours may be required during construction monitoring and high priority project data collection. Incumbent must possess a valid driver's license due to travel to various field sites to conduct field sampling.
Travel to work sites and sample collection or other field work may involve operating a boat or other vehicle to and from the job sites and may require working on uneven terrain. Seasonally frequent travel to Skinner Delta Fish Protective Facility will be required, including weekends and occasional holidays. Incumbent must possess a valid driver's license to drive a personal or State vehicle.
