Equipment Operator - Repairs

Raleigh Water - Water Distribution division is looking for five (5) Equipment Operators to join our team. Equipment Operators are devoted to completing preventive maintenance, utility repairs, utility locating, participating in investigations within our water system and providing excellent customer service. The Equipment Operator also performs maintenance and equipment operation for the City’s distribution system by performing skilled activities in support of maintaining, replacing, and repairing water assets, such as services, mains, and fire hydrants, and so forth.

Work Location:
Each role's work location will be determined once a candidate has been chosen and our management has determined where that role will be based. These five vacancies will work/report out of one of the following locations:

Work Hours: 
Primary workdays and hours are Monday to Friday from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm. This position includes rotating after-hours on-call responsibilities. When on call, you'll receive standby pay for 8 hours at your regular hourly rate. If you're called out to work during your on-call shift, you'll be compensated at the overtime rate as per our company policy. We understand that flexibility is key! Our on-call schedules as well as after-hours work requirements can vary based on seasonal needs and operational requirements. Therefore, the ability to work a flexible schedule is essential for this role.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.


 

  • Installs, replaces, and repairs assets such as water services, mains, fire hydrants, valves, sample stations, and auto flushers
  • Serves as a second hand to the primary repair person for the crew
  • Assists with setting up and breaking down work zones, including signage and traffic control devices
  • Repairs leaking, broken, or damaged system components
  • Maintains yard area daily, monthly, or as needed
  • Hauls equipment and materials to and from job sites
  • Monitors and ensures safe working conditions and environment. Identifies potential hazards and initiates or coordinates corrective action to maintain safety
  • Ensures availability, maintenance and operability of safety and work-related equipment, monitoring processes and activities to assure quality.
  • Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance with proper tools and equipment for tasks, following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
  • Inspects heavy equipment to identify any mechanical issues. Maintains equipment daily and reports needed repairs to the appropriate supervisor or performs minor repairs on equipment

 

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and less than 1 year experience in light to medium construction equipment operation or related work, such as:

  • Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation 
  • Construction: grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction 
  • Mechanic: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems 
  • Farming: manual labor, equipment operating 
  • Moving Company: labor, truck driver 
  • General Municipal Worker: utility inspector 
  • Tech School Student: mechanical 
  • Firefighter: full or part-time 


OR 

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
