Chemical Inventory Student Assistant

JOB OVERVIEW

Under direct and indirect supervision, perform a variety of duties at the operational level. Specifically,

  • Assist with data collection, entry, and maintenance of various research safety databases including:
    • Chemical inventories via the UC Chemicals database software program;
    • Controlled Substances
    • Biological Safety
    • UC Learning Center –verify training records
  • Professionally interact with laboratory research staff in research buildings while collecting chemical inventory data.
  • Visit laboratories around campus and perform collection of inventory data, in any of the following areas: Chemicals, Radioactive, Controlled Substances and Biological materials.
  • Perform project related assignments in one or more fields of research safety (biosafety, chemical safety, occupational health).
  • Safely handle chemicals and controlled substances related to research activities.
  • Coordinate activities with EH&S staff.
  • Assist with other divisions within the EH&S Department, on an as needed basis.
  • Administrative duties can include making copies, mailing, faxing, emailing and filing records.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid and current California Driver’s License.
  • The position provides assistance to safety professionals in all technical programs.
  • This position requires the ability to follow detailed instructions, to maintain accurate records, and to exercise good judgment in the field.
  • The successful candidate for the position must possess an intermediary knowledge of chemistry/organic chemistry and/or environmental health/science.
  • Must have effective communication and time management skills.
  • Must be willing to work and/or handle potentially hazardous chemicals.
  • Major in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Public Health or Social Ecology.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (predominantly Excel and Word).
  • Proficient in Google Drive and Google Sheets applications.
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills to perform all duties.
  • Ability to interact effectively with UCI faculty, staff and students.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Maximum 40 hours/week during summer quarter; dispersed over 3-5 days a week, Monday – Friday
  • Maximum 15 hours/week during fall, winter, and spring quarters; dispersed over 3-5 days a week, Monday – Friday
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others to accomplish goals. Quality verbal communication (small and large group settings) and written communication (email, letters).
  • Ability to interact (in person or via telephone) with vendors, students, and the public in a polite and efficient manner.
  • Ability to quickly read, write, and count accurately to complete all documentation.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to relate to students, faculty and staff while representing EH&S.
  • Ability to represent EH&S and safety culture to the campus.
  • Ability to safety and comfortably handle and work with hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to carry 15 to 20 pounds safely.
