Chief of Safety and Security

Under general direction of the Vice President of Administrative and Student Services, this position maintains high visibility in securing the safety of the campus; monitors campus buildings and parking lots and enforces parking regulations; files incidents reports, maintain incident logs, must be able to carry a registered weapon; must be able to meet emergencies using CPR and First Aid.  


Salary Schedule: Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule C2 based on experience. ($77,611 - 120,346)

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  1. Organize and supervise the operations and implementation of a public safety service program for the college in order to (a) secure and protect the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors (b) secure and protect the properties of the college.
  2. Serve as Chief of Campus Police Force. 
  3. Maintain records for state, federal, and college reports.
  4. Schedule shifts of security personnel to carry out an effective safety and security program for the college to ensure proper coverage of the College; this includes scheduling shifts for all special activities and events.
  5. Submit and maintain budget for the police department.
  6. Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with faculty, staff, students and the general public in carrying out and effectively communicating a public safety service concept for the college.
  7. Organize and supervise the implementation and enforcement of adequate traffic and parking regulations of the college during routine operating hours as well as for special events and emergencies.
  8. Establish and maintain an effective cooperative working relationship with local law enforcement and safety agencies required to strengthen and support the safety and security operation of the college.
  9. Develop and maintain an effective system for security communication on campus as well as communications with external assisting law enforcement, fire, and emergency agencies required for emergency backup support.
  10. Examine, investigate and handle complaints, accidents, disturbances and charges related to the safety and security of college personnel and properties and prepare and maintain written reports regarding these matters.
  11. Attend Student disciplinary hearings as required by the Dean of Student Services or Vice President.
  12. Maintain the LETS Access with the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center for the college.
  13. Implement an on-going program of continuing education, professional development and on-the-job training for all safety and security personnel.
  14. Develop, maintain and implement appropriate emergency evacuation procedures required for the safety of college personnel in the event of fire, tornado, bomb threat and/or other emergency situations.
  15. Maintain written procedures for locating students in the case of emergencies and/or other security-related matters of the college.
  16. Supervise the use, operation and maintenance of the college security vehicle and all other equipment assigned for the use and operation by the security staff of the college.
  17. Complete requisitions for materials, supplies, and equipment required to implement the security program of the college.
  18. Maintain a current and up-to-date Safety Manual for the effective operation of the Safety and Security Program of the college.
  19. Recommend the appointment of safety and security staff, evaluate performance and recommend promotions, demotions, terminations and dismissals as required.
  20. Ensure that College Police daily log book is current and accurate.
  21. Assist as required in the verification of college inventory.
  22. Perform other job related duties assigned the Vice President of Administrative and Student Services.


The Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management will be expected to work a flexible schedule which may include day, evening, night and weekend hours. Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION, STANDARDS, AND TRAINING
 

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution 
  • Five years of full-time related experience 

REQUIRED LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, OR SPECIAL CREDENTIALS:

  1. APOST Certification
  2. CPR Certification 
  3. Valid Driver’s License (CDL) preferred, valid pistol permit
  4. Certification and skills in the use of lethal and nonlethal force
  5. Managerial experience 
  6. Computer skills
  7. Effective oral and written communication

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to tolerate exposure to weather when on outside duties. 
  2. Ability to display courtesy when dealing with the public. 
  3. Ability to tolerate shift work as required.  
  4. Effective oral and written skills.
