Math Tutor

POSITION SUMMARY: 
Rainier Scholars – Tacoma is seeking a responsible and knowledgeable Math Tutor to support the academic success of 5th – 8th grade students of color in Tacoma, primarily from lower-income backgrounds and first-generation college families.  
 
In collaboration with the Associate Executive Director, the Math Tutor works with students individually or in small intervention groups to strengthen math fundamentals and build confidence in their learning.  
 
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Meet with students on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to provide individual or small group math support. Meetings will be conducted in person in Tacoma, as determined in consultation with the Associate Executive Director.  
  • Identify math exercises that connect to what scholars are working on in school, depending upon experience. 
  • Align tutoring activities with students’ schoolwork and curriculum, tailoring support based on experience and student needs. 
  • Use assessments and data to plan instruction and track progress. As needed, make adjustments to support learning progress. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Strong math skills and an ability to break down challenging concepts.
  • Content knowledge that supports working with students through Algebra 1
     
  • Strong listening and oral communication skills; 
  • A passion for working with children; 
  • Ability to build strong relationships with students and help them build confidence in their math abilities.  
  • Ability to work respectfully with the diverse cultures represented by Rainier Scholars. 

 

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS, & WORKING ENVIRONMENT 

Compensation for this role is $50 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a part-time, non-exempt position and is eligible for Paid Sick and Safe Time (PSST) in accordance with Washington State law. 

 

Tutors are compensated for 4–8 (maximum) hours per week, including both instructional time and lesson preparation. Instruction will typically occur on Wednesdays and/or Thursdays between 2:00–6:30 p.m., from October 2025 through May 2026. Strong preference for candidates who can travel and work on-site at the Tacoma office. Schedules are subject to change based on program needs.
