Formulation Engineer Internship
Hobart Brothers Company, an Illinois Tool Works Company, is a recognized leader in the manufacturing and distribution of welding consumables worldwide. Our team of Formulators and Development Engineers use their talents within this organization to create and develop new filler metals geared towards meeting our customer’s needs. New Product development includes rigorous testing of as-welded filler metals as well as designing new consumable products to meet industry and operational standards.
Position: Materials Science or Welding Engineering Intern
Time Frame: Summer 2026
Key areas of learning:
Work with development engineers to learn basic alloy design of metal cored and flux cored wires and to conduct studies & tests for internal validation
Will be trained to submit wire formulations using Hobart software for manufacturing on the R & D equipment
Will be trained to operate welding and test equipment as needed. Ability to conduct tests and validate with hands-on welding can be expected
Gain an understanding of wire manufacturing processes on weld performance
Characterize new materials and evaluate through substitution formulation testing to qualify new suppliers and chemicals.
Intern will work with cross functional internal team members including engineers, technicians, and marketing personnel
Qualifications/Requirements:
Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science Engineering, Welding Engineering or related Engineering field
Must be classified as a Junior or Senior for 2026-2027 academic year
Open to MS candidates in similar fields
Strong interpersonal & communication skills
Self-motivated
Comfortability working in teams
Strong prioritization & organization skills (80/20!)
