Occupational Safety & Health Intern

General Summary:  
Great River Energy is seeking an Occupational Safety & Health Intern in Elk River, MN, to assist in the development and administration of safety policies and programs in conjunction with the safety and human performance team to ensure a safe working environment for all employees in the transmission division. Much of the work will be in a normal office environment with some work being performed in the field at construction sites. 


Job Responsibilities:
Safety Program Management: 

Develop and implement occupational safety programs that support a safe work environment.
Maintain hazard assessment data
Monitor progress on safety related goals and safety indicators
Support projects that improve the efficiency or effectiveness of hazard controls
Research industry best practices to keep abreast of industry trends and changes in regulatory matters impacting hazard controls

Field Activities: 

Participate in field site visits and activities to understand work practices and help identify improvements.
Take part in periodic on-site site employee safety contacts and help to identify opportunities to improve safe work practices or processes
Participate in field-related safety training
Recommend corrective actions to prevent injuries to personnel

Communications: 

Maintain open communication with the safety & human performance team, other company safety personnel, and division leaders.
Requirements:


Education & Experience: 
Must be enrolled in a degree program in occupational safety, engineering or related field at an accredited institution.  Previous experience in safety, training, or construction is a plus.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize time and workload in order to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines.
• Ability to build and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and external customers.
• Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations.
• Ability to conduct research and interpret safety policies, procedures and regulations.

Internship Duration:
The duration of the internship will consist of full-time hours (40 hours/week) during the summer and academic breaks, and part-time hours (10+/week) during the academic year. Continuation in the internship program will be based on performance and business needs.  Eligibility to work in a hybrid environment may be granted upon successful integration into the role and at the discretion of management.
