Air Pollution Specialist

The Monitoring and Laboratory Division (MLD) is seeking highly qualified candidates to join the Special Analysis Section (SAS) within the Northern Laboratory Branch. SAS is a cutting-edge laboratory that provides critical analytical support for the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) Consumer Products Program and the Composite Wood Products Airborne Toxic Control Measure.

SAS staff analyze chemically formulated consumer products and aerosol coating products to ensure compliance with volatile organic compound (VOC) limits, toxic air contaminant prohibitions, and greenhouse gas emissions. SAS also tests composite wood products for formaldehyde emissions and offers laboratory support for special investigations and studies across various CARB Air Pollution Control Programs.

Key responsibilities include performing chemical analyses, reviewing and reporting analytical data, managing samples, maintaining chain-of-custody procedures, and conducting targeted analyses to support CARB’s Enforcement and Transportation & Toxics Divisions. In this fast-paced, production-focused setting, staff also develop new analytical methods and enhance existing techniques.

SAS utilizes a wide range of sophisticated instruments, including Ion Chromatography, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry, Karl Fischer titration for water analysis, and Gas Chromatography with various detectors such as Flame Ionization, Thermal Conductivity, and Mass Spectrometry.

SAS team members collaborate closely with other branches within MLD, divisions across CARB, external stakeholders, other CalEPA departments, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Office of the State Attorney General.
