Program Details
Start Date: December 15, 2025
Schedule: 12-hour variable shifts (7a–7p or 7p–7a)
Commitment: Minimum of 4 shifts per month (2 must be weekends)
Position Type: PRN (not benefit-eligible)
Orientation: Two-week, full-time (day shift) training prior to starting on the unit
Role Overview
Under the direction of an RN and within organizational and unit policies, Nurse Externs:
Provide patient care based on age, acuity, and needs.
Seek out varied learning experiences and communicate learning needs to their preceptor.
Apply the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Support patient outcomes through collaboration, delegation, and coaching in appropriate situations.
Document and communicate patient status, resources used, and anticipated needs each shift.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program and within one year of graduation (expected Spring/Winter 2026).
- Completion of a pharmacology course or successful completion of Bronson’s medication test.
- BLS Certification required.
- Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various systems and equipment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Physical & Work Requirements
- Regular standing, walking, and lifting of light-weight objects (up to 20 lbs).
- Occasional assistance with heavier tasks (patient transfers, lifting).
- Frequent mental/visual concentration typical of roles with diverse responsibilities and deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- In collaboration with an RN preceptor, the Nurse Extern will:
- Collect and document nursing histories, vital signs, and assessments.
- Assist in developing and managing patient care plans.
- Administer prescribed treatments and medications under RN supervision.
- Educate patients and families according to care plans.
- Respond to emergencies following nursing standards and protocols.
- Support discharge planning and resource management.
- Prepare equipment and assist physicians during procedures.
- Participate in unit performance improvement activities.
- Contribute to a positive team climate and serve as a role model when appropriate.
Note: Certain RN responsibilities cannot be assumed by a Nurse Extern. These limitations are clearly outlined and acknowledged during orientation.
