Community Chef – Farmers Market (September–November)
About Us
From June to November, we operate community-based farmers’ markets in Harlem and the Bronx. We aim to make fresh, locally grown produce accessible while building food education and cultural connection in our neighborhoods. We host Kids Club activities, live events, and cooking demonstrations to inspire families to cook, eat, and learn together.
Position Summary
From September to November, we seek a Community Chef to lead interactive cooking demonstrations at our farmers’ markets. The chef will share clear, culturally relevant nutrition information, engage with community members of all ages, and showcase creative ways to prepare seasonal produce. This role requires strong cooking skills, excellent communication, and making food education fun and approachable.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead interactive cooking demonstrations at assigned market sites
- Share clear, culturally relevant nutrition information with market participants
- Maintain food safety standards throughout all demonstrations
- Distribute nutrition education materials to market visitors
- Communicate supply and ingredient needs in advance to market staff
- Work outdoors for long periods in various weather conditions
Qualifications & Skills
- Hold a valid NYC Food Protection Certificate
- Demonstrate strong cooking skills, including knife skills and food prep techniques
- Bring experience in nutrition, culinary education, or community health (preferred)
- Understand locally grown fruits and vegetables and their seasonal availability
- Show an outgoing, approachable personality with strong public speaking skills
- Work comfortably outdoors in varied weather conditions
- Multilingual skills are a plus (especially Spanish, French, Creole, Mandarin, Cantonese, Bengali, or Russian)
Rate: $150 per session
Time: 2-2.5 hours
