Air Resources Engineer

The Fuels Evaluation Section of the Industrial Strategies Division (ISD) is responsible for developing new fuel pathways and for evaluating fuel pathway applications from fuel producers or their designated consultants. Once the section certifies new fuel pathways, those pathways are available for reporting under the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS). Fuel pathways provide regulated parties with greater flexibility for complying with the LCFS regulation designed to reduce the carbon intensity of transportation fuel by twenty percent by 2030. Key activities of the section related to new fuel pathways include reviewing fuel pathway applications for accuracy and completeness, assisting alternative fuel producers with the development of new or modified fuel pathways, and using lifecycle analysis models to develop fuel pathways with broad applicability.

Under the direction of the Air Resources Supervisor I (ARSI), the Air Resources Engineer (ARE) utilizes engineering skills and expertise to review and analyze fuel pathway and project-based crediting applications, performs refinery modelling, and develops lifecycle analysis methodologies, emissions estimates, and documentation for use in the LCFS regulation and other CARB programs. The position requires close interaction and teamwork with other California Air Resources Board (CARB) staff, as well as a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including other CARB divisions, government agencies, policymakers, industry, environmental organizations, and the public. The Air Resources Engineer represents the agency in various joint operations, speak before groups, answer inquiries, and prepare reports and correspondence.
