Kelp Genomics Research Assistant

The Global Change Research Group, located in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, is hiring a research assistant to support our lab’s research on giant and bull kelp genomics. In partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, we seek to better understand the genetic health of kelp along the coast of California. To support of this mission, the research assistant will help process kelp tissue, extract DNA, and perform quality control steps. The preferred candidate would have strong communication skills and attention-to-detail, and be available during Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. Previous experience with molecular biology and sterile lab technique is preferred, but not required, we will help you learn the required technical skills. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. 


Estimated number of hours per week: 10 hrs 


 Summary of Duties

This position is primarily based in a molecular ecology wet lab at UCSC’s Coastal Campus. There may be occasional optional opportunities to help with field sampling. Weekly meeting attendance is expected. 


10% meetings

10% documentation, technical write-up

80% lab work processing kelp tissue and DNA samples

 

Preferred by not required:

Genetic and evolution coursework 

Previous molecular biology experience
