Engineering Geologist
The Industrial Strategies Division within the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Engineering Geologist (EG) to help implement and refine CARB’s Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) program — a critical strategy for achieving California’s carbon neutrality goals. As an EG in the Greenhouse Gas Measures Section (GGMS) of the Oil and Gas and Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Branch, you will apply advanced geological, hydrogeological, and reservoir science expertise to evaluate proposed CCS projects, assess geologic suitability for long-term carbon storage, and contribute to the development of CCS regulations and protocols.
If you are passionate about applying geoscience to climate change solutions, thrive in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment, and are eager to contribute to California’s leadership in carbon management, we encourage you to apply!
In this role, you will:
• Review applications for Sequestration Site Certification and CCS Project Certification to ensure compliance with CARB’s CCS Protocol.
• Evaluate site-specific data on geologic formations, seal integrity, monitoring plans, and storage performance.
• Contribute to the development and amendment of CCS regulations, protocols, and technical support documents.
• Prepare and present technical findings to internal and external stakeholders, including at public workshops and interagency meetings.
• Collaborate with other CARB divisions, CalEPA boards and departments, federal and state agencies, industry, and community stakeholders.
This position will require occasional travel for field visits, public meetings, and conferences.
NOTE: If selected for the position, your salary offer is determined by the information you include on your Standard State Application (STD. 678). Please include a detailed description of all relevant experience and education in your application when applying.
You will find additional information about the job in the Duty Statement.
