### **Position: Emergency Department Registered Nurse**
**Purpose of Position:**
To assess, plan, coordinate, and render skilled nursing care to patients while applying standards for professional nursing practice. Provide care ranging from non-urgent to life threatening, including medical illness, trauma care, pediatric care, gerontological care, injury prevention, women’s health, mental health issues and life- and limb-saving measures.

**Essential Functions:**
ED nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Records current symptoms, detailed patient history, and consults and coordinates with healthcare members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
* Performs triage while considering both physical and psychosocial elements.
* Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol.
* Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
* Records patient’s current vital signs.
* Works directly under physicians, and provides assistance during exams, diagnostic testing and treatments.
* Prepares, administers and records prescribed medications, and reports any adverse reactions.
* Provides IV therapy.
* Cleans and bandages wounds.
* Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients.
* Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agency as per Alaska Statute and mandatory reporting guidelines.
* Initiates and educates patients and significant others on managing their illness/injury.
* Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
* Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely in a timely manner.

**Minimum Qualifications:**
* **Education:** Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; BSN preferred.
* **Experience:**
* **Option 1:** 2+ years working as a Registered Nurse with a minimum of 2 years in an Emergency Department.
* **Option 2:** Graduate registered nurse working under the direct management of a preceptor until proven competency and credentials are completed.
* **Licensure & Certifications:**
* Current Alaska RN License or ability to obtain prior to start date.
* BLS and ACLS Certification required.
* PALS, TNCC, and NIHSS Certifications required within one year of hire.
**Required Skills & Abilities:**
* Knowledge of general patient care with an emphasis in emergency medicine.
* Knowledge of documentation requirements for specific fields/records.
* Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and patient service skills.
* Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
* Critical problem-solving and thinking skills.
* Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and typical clinical software.
* Ability to understand and maintain strict patient confidentiality.
**Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:**
* **Physical Demands:** Stand/walk more than half the day; lift/carry 25-50 lbs; push/pull with moderate force; bend, stretch, twist, and reach.
* **Environment:** Work is conducted in a standard clinical environment with exposure to latex, biohazards, or other harmful substances.
* **Travel:** Travel may be required via large aircraft, small aircraft (<16 passengers), snowmobile, all-terrain vehicle, or boat.
