Barge Drafter Intern - Owensboro, KY

SUMMARY:

The Barge Drafter plays a critical role in the design and maintenance of barges and marine structures by producing precise technical drawings and plans. This position blends advanced drafting skills with marine engineering knowledge to support safe, efficient, and regulation-compliant vessel construction and modification.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop detailed CAD drawings for barge layouts, hull structures, and onboard systems.
  • Collaborate with naval architects and marine engineers to convert design concepts into technical schematics.
  • Integrate principles of materials science, structural integrity, and hydrodynamics into drafting work.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Revise drawings based on feedback from engineering teams, shipyards, and field inspections.
  • Conduct site visits and field surveys to verify dimensions and gather data for updates.
  • Maintain organized records of drawings, revisions, and associated documentation.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Drafting, Marine Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Rhino, and marine design software such as GHS and Maxsurf
  • Solid understanding of marine terminology, vessel systems, and structural components
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Effective communicator and team collaborator

PHYSICAL & OPERATIONAL DUTIES:

  • May assist with loading barges, checking drafts, handling lines and cables, and moving barges during operations.
  • Occasionally required to work evenings or weekends depending on project timelines.
