Work Study Civic Education Intern
UNI’s Center for Civic Education (CCE) enhances civic education among university students, pre-K-12 students and teachers, and the broader public by developing and implementing effective civic learning strategies and encouraging respectful dialogue across differences, and offering educational resources on free speech and civic knowledge. It promotes the values of free speech, civic leadership, public service and citizenship.
The CCE’s Fall 2025 priorities include introducing the CCE to a range of stakeholders (including students) through participating in campus and community events; coordinating civic events such as Constitution Day, guest speakers, and civic salons; crafting the CCE brand; and, developing a multi-year strategic plan.
Internship Expectations
The individual hired for the Fall 2025 internship will be responsible for:
- Developing civic education materials (e.g., games, tabling materials, feedback forms, etc.) appropriate for a range of events and audiences
- Representing the CCE at campus and community events
- Creating a profile of the UNI student experience to be used as part of the strategic planning process
- Contributing 120 hours of work over the course of the semester through a combination of in-person and online tasks
Depending on the interests and abilities of the individual hired for this position, additional responsibilities may include designing CCE materials (e.g. rack cards, stickers), drafting literature reviews, and planning collaborations with campus and/or community organizations.
Required Qualifications
Strong Written and Verbal Communication: As a new center, the CCE is building its reputation on campus and in the community. Applicants should be able to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally on the Center’s behalf whether replying to an email or tabling at an event.
Flexibility: Meaningful civic education responds to events and opportunities as they arise. Applicants should be able to respond appropriately to changing priorities in Center needs or programming and, with support, prioritize tasks according to urgency and importance.
Commitment to Nonpartisanship: The CCE’s priorities include creating opportunities where individuals can engage a wide range of viewpoints. While applicants will, of course, have their own political viewpoints, when planning programming and representing the Center the focus must be on drawing out a multiplicity of perspectives while not endorsing any particular position.
