Youth Justice Worker

LANGLADE COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION

YOUTH JUSTICE WORKER

 

Department:                      Social Services

Reports to:                          Director of Social Services

Grade/Wage:                    Grade 14, $24.00 to $28.00/hour

FLSA Status/Hours:          Non-Exempt, 37.5 Hours per week

Summary:

Provide supervision and coordination of services provided on behalf of juveniles and their families when a juvenile is referred to Juvenile Court for activities that are in conflict with the law. Serves as a liaison between the Juvenile Court and such entities as law enforcement, schools and other agencies/committees concerned with juvenile crime.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily and in a timely manner. The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

  • Directly responsible for maintaining detailed current knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations that pertain to juvenile justice issues.
  • Represents the Juvenile Court’s interest in matters associated with the Office of the District Attorney.
  • Responsible for maintaining positive relations and open referral channels with the victims, area schools and the general public.
  • Actively participates in community and interagency groups concerning juvenile delinquency.
  • Serves as the Juvenile Court’s representative(s) to the Wisconsin Juvenile Court Intake Worker’s Association.
  • Monitors the statutes and timelines of referrals through the legal process.
  • responsible for implementing the state standard youth screening tool.
  • Responsible for coordination of “on-call” duties with the Department of Social Services. Must also be familiar with Wisconsin Statures under Chapter 48 when addressing cases where child abuse and/or neglect are involved.
  • Responsible for both the coordination of out-of-home placements of youth offenders and their return to the community, specific to state correctional facilities, group homes, residential care facilities and treatment foster homes. 
  • Provides electronic monitoring of youth offenders.
  • Provides random alcohol and drug screening of youth offenders.
  • Screens all delinquency referrals to determine jurisdiction.
  • Conducts intake inquiries for determination of possible dispositions.
  • Monitors obligations of deferred prosecution agreements and/or dispositional orders.
  • Provides counseling as requested.
  • Provides appropriate sanctions for youth offenders who are not following rules of supervision, which may include use of secure detention and/or shelter care not to exceed 72 hours unless otherwise specified in a court order.
  • Prepares written court reports, submitting them seven days prior to the Dispositional hearing.
  • Maintains responsibility for ensuring the confidentiality of all client information.
  • Make referrals to other community agencies in a timely fashion.
  • Appears at court hearings, testifies at hearings as requested and makes appropriate recommendations to the court.
  • Participates in-service trainings and attends workshops as requested.
  • Provides case management services, coordinating referrals of youth offenders.
  • Provides a wide range of comprehensive services to juveniles and their families.

Education and/or Experience;

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology or other Human Services related field, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must be familiar with juvenile justice practices and be familiar with the Wisconsin Juvenile Justice Code and be able to apply this regularly in day-to-day operations.

 

Technological Skills:

 

Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office Suite. The Youth Justice Worker will also become familiar with the electronic monitoring system and how to install the required equipment.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand, walk and sit. 
  • The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. 
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • The employee may travel long distances in a vehicle to attend meetings, typing reports, dealing with combative youth and collecting urine samples for drug tests.
