Outreach intern for C. P. Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity

1. Job Description:

The C. P. Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity at Colorado State University is a premier insect collection with 4.7 million specimens. The collection is used for research, teaching, and extension. We are seeking a motivated and creative student intern to join our team. This is a fantastic opportunity for a current CSU student to gain experience in science communication, social media management, and event coordination. 

The intern will play a key role in enhancing the museum's outreach efforts, engaging with the community, and promoting our mission to discover, preserve, and promote arthropod diversity of the Rocky Mountain region and beyond through research, teaching, and extension.

The job would require 3–6 hours a week. The exact number of hours could vary depending on the time of year and events planned. Flexibility in hours will accommodate the student’s academic schedule and Museum needs.

2. Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Creating a visually appealing Museum newsletter
  • Coordinating and participating in outreach events at CSU and in Fort Collins, including tours, insect exhibitions, etc.
  • Communicating museum updates and facts about bugs and people in the museum via social media
  • Operating our insect macrophotography setup to create outreach materials

3. Required Skills:

  • Passion for entomology and science communication
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in managing social media accounts (e.g., Instagram)
  • Experience with Canva or similar design tools
  • Creativity and initiative in generating outreach ideas

4. Preferred Skills:

  • Interest in event planning and coordination
  • Basic photography/videography skills
  • Familiarity with CSU and Fort Collins community
