
Multnomah County Health Department Student Health Center Internship 2025-2026
The Student Health Center (SHC) program operates clinics in 9 high schools in Multnomah County. We facilitate access to comprehensive preventive, primary, and mental health care for school-aged youth. Our SHC teams work with school and community partners to promote the whole community, whole school and whole child health, and we strive to empower youth voice through Student Health Action Councils at our high school SHC sites. This internship will focus on the coordination of Student Health Action Councils (SHACs) and will work in partnership with youth, SHC staff, and schools to promote health in school communities. **Onboarding for this position position would happen right away, but official position duties would not start until The Start of October 2025**
Internship Title: Youth Engagement Intern
Salary: $24 per hour (10 hours per week)
Location: The Youth Engagement Intern will work at two Student Health Center sites in Multnomah County. Placements will be determined with candidates during the interview and selection process.
Hours: Requires a commitment of 10 hours per week with breaks during school vacations and holidays. Weekly attendance is expected at Student Health Action Council meetings (during school lunch or after school), in office time on Tuesdays at 10317 E Burnside St, Portland, OR 97216, and virtual work.
Intern Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with health center team to coordinate and facilitate SHAC meetings and activities
- Partner with youth to identify, develop, and implement health promotion projects and campaigns
- Support communication and partnership building with SHC staff, school and community partners
- Conduct outreach and recruitment activities to increase awareness of the SHC and participation in SHAC
- Assist with program tracking, evaluation, and continual improvement of SHAC & SHC programming
- Learning Opportunities:
- The intern will have the opportunity to engage in school-based public health and youth development work; receive training; network and partner with employees from the health department, schools, and community-based organizations; and apply relevant concepts and skills from their coursework. The internship will be under the direction of the Student Health Center Project Manager; the intern will work with the program coordinator to establish a learning contract for the internship experience.
- Qualifications:
- Enrolled or plan to enroll in a graduate or undergraduate degree program in a relevant field (e.g. public health, education, social work, etc.)
- Experience or strong interest in working with youth in a high school setting
- Strong communication, facilitation, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a diverse team
- Knowledge and skills in one or more of the following areas: health promotion, adolescent health education, positive youth development, participatory action research, and/or program evaluation
- Ability to commit to 10 hours per week and consistently attend SHAC meetings
- Candidates with professional and/or lived experience with diverse, marginalized communities preferred
- Finalists must pass a background check
- Access to reliable transportation, ability to use a personal vehicle preferred.
