FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-exempt
Hours: Part-time up to 29.0 hrs/wk. Some evenings, weekends & holidays are required as needed
Compensation: Starting at $16.43 per hour (.50 after 90 days and again after 1 year)
Shift Schedule: Sunday, Monday, Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
This shift will be adjusted as needed to accommodate the needs of service
The Grand Rapids Public Museum is the oldest and one of the largest museums in the state of Michigan. We are a place of never-ending learning and discovery, with programs and exhibits focusing on history, science, and culture. The employee culture of the GRPM is one of teamwork, excitement, and learning. As an integral part of the West Michigan community, the Museum is open daily to visitors and hosts after-hours public events and programs, as well as private events and weddings. The entire GRPM team works to create positive visitor experiences through engaging exhibits and programs, and a safe, clean, welcoming space.
SUMMARY:
Our custodial team is responsible for providing guests with a clean, friendly, safe environment within the Grand Rapids Public Museum. While this position may have some assignments or responsibilities reporting to the Director of Exhibits, Facilities & Security, the general work performance is provided under the supervision of the Custodial Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES include the following:
- Museum Exhibit spaces may consist of additional requirements for traveling exhibits.
- Classroom, office, and restroom cleaning.
- Vacuuming: upright or VacPac.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedures.
- Mopping, use of auto scrubbers/other floor machines.
- Trash removal.
- Replace light bulbs, clean light fixtures, and remove cobwebs, etc.
- Move and replace chairs, tables, and other furnishings to clean surrounding surfaces.
- Handles events, meetings & lunchroom set-up and teardown activities based on schedule.
- Interact with the public as needed in a professional and friendly manner.
- Ability to communicate using a two-way radio.
- Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE:
- Knowledge in cleaning or custodial work.

- Valid Michigan Driver’s License preferred.
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to move, bend, stoop, reach, climb, balance and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Work from ladders at a height of 12 feet or from mechanical lifts at a height of 45 feet.
- The ability to stand, walk, and use stairs for extended periods.
