Library Assistant I
Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Education - Associates Degree
Minimum Qualification - Associates Degree with 1-2 years of work experience in a library or customer service environment.
Description:
Greets and assists customers who enter or call the library. Refers customers to other internal departments when appropriate and may provide guidance and basic instruction regarding using the online catalog, downloading materials, accessing databases, and other services. Performs circulation duties, including registering customers for library cards, updating customer accounts, accepting fines and fees, reserving and renewing materials. Utilizes databases, bibliographies, and other resources to recommend specific books and materials that the customer requests. Inspects and performs maintenance of materials. Promotes all services and programs of the library.
Provides customer service concerning accounts. Explains policies and procedures regarding holds, overdues, and fines and fees and in reference to customer inquiry as to the status of their account. Performs circulation duties including checking materials in and out, renewing materials, registering customers for library cards, updating customer records, assessing damages to library materials, and collecting money for fines and fees, and placing materials on hold as requested by customer. Collects and keeps accurate records of fines, fees, and copier revenue and may prepare and make deposits.
Greets and assists customers explaining the Dewey Decimal System and guiding customers in identifying and accessing materials and services. Explains library facility layout and location of collections. Instructs customers on accessing the internet and utilizing their online accounts, including renewing materials and placing items on holds. Troubleshoots access issues for computers, eReaders, and Wifi. May instruct and delegate duties to adult volunteers.
Promotes library services and programs. Refers customers to programs and print and online calendars and schedules. Explains meeting and study room policies and makes reservations for customers. Discerns patron interests and needs and is able to guide them to materials, programs, and services that meet their expectations. Conducts group tours and educates customers concerning a variety of library resources and services. Creates and maintains book displays that promote library materials, programs, and services.
Maintains the library’s collections. Runs reports to organize and maintain the collections and to resolve issues of lost items, hold requests, and low circulation. Assists in the collection development process making recommendations of materials to be added to the collection. Assesses physical quality of materials and may perform general book repair. Sorts and organizes materials to prepare for shelving. Assesses collections’ order and potential space limitations and shifts materials as needed. Empties book drop as assigned and checks in materials. Sorts items for shelving and routing. Processes periodical subscriptions. Applies labels and shelf locations to all new materials.
Inventories cataloging and office supplies for the department. Submits supply needs to appropriate staff member.
Performs a variety of functions daily to keep the library operational. Assists in opening and closing procedures. May change outdoor signage. Assists in general housekeeping and straightening of public areas both inside and out. Assists with set up and break down of meeting rooms and programs. May process returned materials after hours and on Holidays in order to keep workflow up to date. Works in other library departments as needed.
