Employee will be assigned to the Division of Water and Waste Management (DWWM), Water Quality Standards and Assessment Section (WQSAS), Monitoring Unit. Although the duties are considered Statewide, the selected candidate will be required to live within a reasonable driving distance to the Charleston Headquarters.
Under general supervision, employee will perform entry level professional work and assist higher level specialists and analysts in support of the WQSAS in both office and field settings. Field-related duties:
- Collect data on the physical and chemical properties of water in streams and lakes
- Assess riparian and in-stream habitat conditions
- Evaluate watershed activities and disturbances
- Collect samples of benthic macroinvertebrate and fish communities
- Conduct field reconnaissance for potential sampling and assessment locations
- Perform pollutant source tracking
- Provide public education services about the environment to schools, watershed groups, and other requesting entities
Office-related duties:
- Review and enter stream and lake assessment data (QA/QC)
- Assist senior staff with data analysis and reporting
- Work with GIS systems to analyze and manage environmental data
- Summarize environmental data for reporting
- Scan assessment documents for recordkeeping
- Create tables and graphical outputs for reports
- Perform additional tasks as required and/or assigned
Other Expectations:
- Must be able to read and interpret topographic maps.
- Must be capable of carrying 30 pounds of equipment over a variety of terrain (including stream crossings) and in varying weather conditions in all seasons.
- Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle in rugged terrain. Experience in trailering and operating small boats is desired.
- Extensive travel will be required, including overnight travel up to four nights per week every week.

- Regular attendance is an essential part of this position.

Minimum Qualifications
Training: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
OR
Substitution: Full-time or equivalent part-time paid technical or paraprofessional experience in the acquisition, preservation, protection and enhancement of environmental/natural resources may be substituted for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of experience for every thirty (30) semester hours of training.

Other Information
Preferences will be given to applicants who have degree(s) in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife and Fisheries, Environmental Studies, and Chemistry; and/or with experience in the following areas: Benthic Macroinvertebrate Sampling, Electrofishing Surveys, Stream Habitat Surveys, Water Quality Monitoring, Operating and Trailering Boats, use of personal computers, especially with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office and ArcGIS applications, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
