Position Summary:

The Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Biology Intern to support our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) programming during our summer camp and afterschool sessions. This intern will assist in planning and delivering fun, hands-on biology-based activities for youth ages 5–12, while gaining experience in youth development, science communication, and informal education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and lead age-appropriate biology and environmental science activities (e.g., experiments, nature exploration, microscope sessions, plant/animal studies)
  • Assist in developing weekly STEAM-themed lesson plans aligned with the summer camp schedule
  • Support the coordination of interactive science labs and outdoor nature walks
  • Help facilitate discussions around biological concepts such as ecosystems, anatomy, food chains, and sustainability
  • Collaborate with staff to integrate biology into creative projects (e.g., drawing organisms, model making, science journals)
  • Ensure all sessions are safe, engaging, and inclusive for a diverse group of youth
  • Serve as a role model and mentor, fostering curiosity and a love of science in young learners
  • Help maintain a clean and organized lab or activity space
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and provide input on improving programming

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Education, or a related field
  • Experience working with or mentoring children (ages 5–12) in formal or informal settings
  • Strong interest in STEAM education and science communication
  • Creative, organized, and comfortable leading small groups
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • CPR/First Aid certification a plus (training may be provided)
