This is an opportunity to serve as a key ambassador for motorized recreation in the region.
Collaborating closely with enforcement staff and wildlife area managers, your primary focus will be promote appropriate motorized recreational opportunities on WDFW lands in the region, minimize the impact of motorized recreation on habitat and infrastructure, and foster public education and outreach initiatives.
What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Motorized Recreation Outreach Specialist will,
- Routinely patrol roads and trails using all-terrain vehicle (ATV), utility terrain vehicle (UTV) or motorized vehicle, contacting wildlife area motorized users and providing education.
- Analyze areas of concern, then develop outreach and education plans that emphasize resource protection and user safety to address issues.
- Document rule violations and noncompliance and provide information to enforcement for follow-up as necessary.
- Attend user group and club meetings, documenting concerns and suggestions from these groups.
- Develop and implement volunteer projects with user groups for road and trail maintenance.
- Document accomplishments, and provide reports to wildlife area staff, regional enforcement staff, and Lands Division staff on issues and compliance.
Working Conditions:
Work setting, including hazards:
- This position is primarily a field position, working approximately 75% in the field and 25% in the office.
- Navigate and drive on uneven terrain under all weather conditions, operating vehicles for long periods of time.
- Operate a four-wheel drive vehicle and an ATV/UTV on highway and on remote forest and rangeland roads in moderate to difficult terrain.
- Some hiking is expected.
- On rare occasions, this position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.
Schedule: 40 hours per week 24/7 schedule. The position must work a flexible work schedule that will include some evening and primarily weekend work and seasonal schedule adjustments which reflect recreation use patterns.
Travel Requirements: Position requires daily travel from office to field in the region. Travel and overnight stays are expected for efficient work on the farthest Green Dot roads from the duty station.
Tools and Equipment: Agency vehicle, ATV/UTV/ORV, radio, cellphone, GPS, standard office equipment and the use of standard size vehicles and trailers.
Customer Interactions: Daily contact with the public, volunteers, external customers, stakeholders. Contact with tribes, various state and local governments and environmental groups on a weekly to monthly basis. Position may include interactions with individuals experiencing anger, distress, or frustration.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree involving major study in forestry, agriculture, aquaculture, geology, recreation, or related natural science and one (1) year of professional experience in a related natural resources specialty area.
Or
Five (5) years of closely related professional experience in a natural resources specialty area (such as forestry, range management, soil science, working on a farm/ranch, or conducting agricultural improvement practices), including at least two (2) years conducting wildlife or habitat enhancement activities
Certifications/Licenses:
Valid Driver’s License
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
- ATV and UTV Certifications (training provided and to be completed within 6 months of hire).
- First Aid/CPR (training provided and to be completed within 6 months of hire).
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess one or more of the following:
Experience with/in:
- Recreation management
- Public outreach/communication
- ATV/ORV operation
- Computer software and hardware (Microsoft Office)
- Conflict resolution
