
Accounting Intern
Position: Accounting Intern (Part-time)
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer
Position Overview: Dynamic and detail-oriented Accounting Intern working 15-20 hours per week. (full time available during winter/summer break) The intern will work closely with our Finance & Accounting team on critical projects and assignments, supporting day-to-day financial operations including data entry, accounts payable and receivable, and general bookkeeping functions while ensuring the financial health of our nonprofit organization.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Data Entry - enters financial transactions, invoices, receipts, donations, and other related documents into the accounting system with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Accounts Payable/Receivable - processes vendor invoices, ensures timely payment, manages customer invoices and payments, and tracks donor contributions and pledges.
- Bank Reconciliations - assists in reconciling bank statements to ensure all transactions are properly recorded and discrepancies are identified and resolved.
- Expense Tracking - monitors and records expenses for various construction projects, programs, and departments while maintaining proper cost allocation.
- Grant Reporting Support - assists in maintaining financial records and tracking for grant-related expenses, ensuring compliance with funder requirements.
- Financial Statement Preparation - provides support in preparing monthly and quarterly financial reports for management and board review.
- Filing and Documentation - maintains proper documentation for all transactions, including physical and digital records, ensuring audit readiness.
- Cross-Department Communication - works with Construction, Development, and Family Services departments to ensure proper recording of donations, program expenses, and other financial transactions.

Qualifications:
- Education - currently enrolled (rising junior or senior) or recently graduated from a relevant degree program with focused coursework in finance, accounting, mathematics, or related subjects.
- Experience - relevant experience or coursework in accounting; 1-2 years of bookkeeping or clerical accounting experience preferred, ideally in a nonprofit setting.
Skills:
- Strong organizational skills with excellent judgment and attention to detail.
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage) is a plus.
- Strong critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and remain calm under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse team.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in an office environment with prolonged periods of sitting and computer use.
- Occasional lifting of files and office materials up to 25 pounds.
