Project Engineer Intern
Summary:
As a Project Engineer Intern at Hill Mechanical Corporation (HMC), a division of The Hill Group, you will play a hands-on role in supporting our engineering and project management teams on active construction projects. This internship offers a dynamic opportunity to gain practical experience in mechanical and plumbing systems, construction coordination, and project delivery in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.
You will work closely with experienced engineers, project managers, subcontractors, and clients, assisting in various phases of mechanical construction projects—from planning and estimating to execution and close-out.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in reviewing and understanding mechanical, plumbing, and MEP coordination drawings and specifications.
Support the estimating team in performing quantity take-offs and analyzing bid documents.
Help issue bid requests and gather vendor and subcontractor quotes; support bid evaluations.
Participate in value engineering exercises to optimize cost and performance for project solutions.
Assist in managing subcontractor scopes, contracts, and coordination efforts.
Participate in project team meetings, including kick-offs, safety audits, and progress reviews.
Support the Building Information Modeling (BIM) coordination process and model reviews.
Track and help manage submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), change orders, and project documentation.
Learn and assist with scheduling tools (e.g., two-week look aheads, fabrication schedules).
Help prepare and maintain project logs, files, and reporting systems.
Gain exposure to project budgeting, cost tracking, purchasing processes, and vendor management.
Observe and assist in QA/QC inspections, system start-up, testing, and commissioning efforts.
Understand the basics of project accounting, including purchase orders, job cost codes, and billing cycles.
Learn contract compliance concepts such as insurance programs (OCIP/CCIP), diversity requirements (WBE/MBE), and other key terms.
Attend client and company events, supporting relationship-building efforts.
