Entry-Level Archival Assistant

We are looking for two entry-level archival assistants this fall! Entry-level archival assistants support collection development and the public use of historical primary sources related to Upper Peninsula and NMU history. Our collecting areas include labor, environmental, Native American, and LGBTQ+ topics. Student assistants play a critical role in preserving the past for future generations. The work is challenging and interesting, offering many opportunities to develop valuable professional and academic skills. This position is a fantastic entry point into careers such as History, Archive and Museum Management, or Library and Information Technology.

While many of the daily tasks at the Archives, such as assisting patrons with reference work, are filled in by any student assistants as needed, the two open positions will each see more of different kinds of work: one position will focus more on arrangement, description, and processing, while the other will focus primarily on digitization. Most of our current outstanding projects also involve the processing of U.P. newspapers, so look forward to that!

We are willing to work around your academic schedule and other commitments. Our operational hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. You can work up to 24 hours a week, but a minimum of 10 hours per week is required. Additionally, the Archives does remain open over most academic breaks, so winter/summer work is encouraged, although not a requirement for the position. The upcoming winter break will be especially important, as we will be moving our current location in Harden Hall to a new room upstairs.

Please attach a formal resume and cover letter with the application.

Required skills: Adaptability and problem-solving, professional communication, time management, attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently.

Preferred skills: Customer service background, research and writing skills, Microsoft Excel, experience with digitization and audio-visual editing software (Photoshop, Audition, Premiere Pro).

Open to all majors; suggested for History, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, English, and Journalism.
