Art Gallery Docent for Beall Center for Art + Technology

Job Description:

This position is a Student Assistant position with the title of “Gallery Student Docent” for the Beall Center for Art + Technology. Located in the Claire Trevor School of the Arts (near Mesa Court student housing), the Beall Center is an on-campus gallery space that specializes in artwork rooted in science and technology. In this position, you will learn about the Beall Center, featured artwork on view, and the artists that exhibit in the gallery in order to provide tours to large groups and individual visitors. At times, you will also act as a gallery guard to protect the artwork, and ensure its safety during guest visits. You will work with the Artistic Director to troubleshoot and solve any technical issues with artwork while on view, so a general comfort level with electronics is advised. You will also work closely with the Programs Manager to assist with marketing, special events (on and offsite), social media, and research that supports the mission of the Beall Center. Docents will also have the opportunity to opt-in to our  youth tech-arts educational programs, which support on and offsite education for elementary school children in Orange County. These workshops focus largely on coding, design, creative electronics, and gallery/campus tours. You will also keep track of visitor traffic to the Beall Center, and keep the interior and exterior of the gallery clean and organized. The gallery is open Monday-Saturday, 12pm-6pm, in addition to special events (which have varied hours). You will be assigned regular shifts based on your availability and class schedule each quarter, and encouraged to sign up for additional special event staffing as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Professional demeanor: very organized, punctual, communicative, self-starter, quick learner, friendly, helpful, approachable, and courteous. Comfortable speaking to large groups and working with children; customer service background preferred, but not required. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrate attention to details. Should have prior experience with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat), electronics, and Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications:

Some familiarity with language and vocabulary pertaining to art/art history. Previous student teaching, camp counselor, or youth programs experience is a strong plus. Graphic Design/Photoshop experience is also helpful. Working knowledge of coding, robotics, engineering, or “maker culture” (especially as it pertains to SumoPaint, Scratch, programming, and Arduinos) is a very strong asset.
