Legal Patent Intern
Colgate-Palmolive, (https://www.colgate.com/en-us), a global leader in oral care, home care, and personal care products, is proud to sponsor an internship opportunity for undergraduate students currently in STEM majors who are interested in learning more about a career in patent law.
Patent law is a very specialized aspect of law which focuses primarily on protecting an individual’s or corporation's intellectual property rights. Currently there are less than 50K practicing registered US patent attorneys and patent agents. The goal of this internship is to expose more individuals to the career of being a patent attorney or patent agent by offering a series of training sessions and projects to help the student better understand these careers.
Some highlights of this internship Include:
- Paid internship
- Approximately 10 hours per week working at Colgate’s Global Technology Center in Piscataway, NJ.
- Intern will have an opportunity to learn more about Colgate’s technology, meet with Colgate scientists, engineers, and in-house Patent Department lawyers to understand the importance that intellectual property plays inside a Fortune 200 Corporation.
Intern will be assigned projects such as:
- Reviewing invention disclosures in order to understand the inventive concept;
- Reviewing scientific data provided by the scientists to determine if it adequately supports the claimed invention;
- Reviewing prior patent and scientific literature to determine if a newly submitted invention disclosure contains novel subject matter;
- Drafting responses to US and foreign office actions;
- Drafting new priority patent application
Requirements:
- Sophomore or Junior undergraduate student majoring in chemical sciences, material science, chemical or biomedical or mechanical or packaging engineering.
- Available to work on Colgate’s Global Technology Center campus in Piscataway, NJ for a total of 10 hours per week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
