Multiple graduate research assistant (GRA) positions are available in Dr. Zhongming Zhao's Bioinformatics and Systems Medicine Laboratory (BSML www.uth.edu/bioinfo/), Center for Precision Health, School of Biomedical Informatics, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). The successful candidate is expected to join an established bioinformatics team. The ongoing projects focus on deep learning in precision medicine, functional roles of genetic variants in complex disease, next-generation sequencing, single-cell and spatial omics, and translational/clinical bioinformatics. Funding (multiple NIH grants (U01, 4 R01s, R21, R03), two CPRIT grants, Vice President's Office for Cancer Genomic Medicine, lab/center/professorship startup) is available to support these positions.
The candidate will have the opportunity to access many high-throughput datasets and interact with investigators across UTHealth Houston and the Texas Medical Center. The Lab is highly productive (>400 papers since 2009). Recent publications appeared or were accepted in journals such as Nature Medicine, Nature Communications, Nature Machine Intelligence, Genome Research, Genome Biology, Genome Medicine, The Innovation, GigaScience, NAR, NCB, Gastroenterology, Molecular Psychiatry, etc.
The BSML lab is part of the new Center for Precision Health (CPH), a joint enterprise by the School of Biomedical Informatics and the School of Public Health. The Center is established at UTHealth Houston in response to the emerging need for precision health and artificial intelligence. The Center focuses on precision medicine of Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and other aging-associated diseases, pharmacogenomics, deep learning, and translational bioinformatics. UTHealth Houston is part of the world-renowned Texas Medical Center located in cosmopolitan Houston, Texas, which is the fourth-largest city in the United States. SBMI is the first School of its kind and one of the largest biomedical informatics programs in the country.
For the GRA positions, we welcome the motivated candidates majoring in one of these areas: bioinformatics or computational biology, quantitative science (computer science, mathematics, statistics), genetics, molecular biology, medicine, pharmacology, or a related field. The successful candidate should have a strong interest in applying quantitative methods to explore biomedical problems and have proven skills in at least one programming language (e.g., Perl, Python, R, or C/C++).
A good understanding of genetics, molecular biology, or clinical medicine is a plus, but not required. For more information about our research, please visit the website www.uth.edu/bioinfo/.
Candidate must be currently enrolled and in good standing in a UTHealth Houston graduate program.
To apply for this position, please email Professor Zhao your CV and cover letter to Zhongming.Zhao@uth.tmc.edu.
